I'm old enough to remember getting paregoric for ear aches. Paregoric is
tincture of opium. Mom kept a bottle in the medicine cabinet, next to the
mercurochrome (mercury) antiseptic. We kids loved to play with little balls
of mercury that rolled around the floor when a thermometer broke.
I'm also old enough to remember the x-ray machines in Buster Brown shoe
stores for checking the fit of kids' shoes. We kids thought it was so cool
to look down into the viewer and watch the bones in our toes move as we
wiggled them.
Oh, and as a teenager, mom gave me whiskey for menstrual cramps and offered
to teach me how to smoke in private so I wouldn't embarrass myself learning
at a party. I rigorously declined the smoking lessons.
We really don't want to launch into a thread about car safety, do we?
