I wish Fred Meyer had been so proactive about training its *managers* about
welcoming breastfeeding mothers! In April 2006, I was told that I should
cover up while nursing my then 2-month-old son by a store manager at a Fred
Meyer here in Portland, Oregon, and then later chastized for being
"indiscreet" by a district manager when I called to complain about the
incident. One blog, letter-writing campaign, and TV news story later (during
which I proudly breastfed my boy!), I received an apology from the company
and was promised that all employees would be "re-educated" about the
company's policy welcoming breastfeeding mothers to its stores. It took them
quite a while (over six months in fact) and some more prodding from me
before they began to follow through on their promise, so I'm especially glad
to hear that they continue to do the right thing, even up in Alaska!
