Hi Jennifer,

At my WIC agency, our breastfeeding coordinator began a breastfeeding
support group recently. She made it a WIC class, and breastfeeding moms are
enrolled in the class as early post-partum as possible. The "class" is
offered once each month, for both English- and Spanish-speaking moms (2
seperate groups and times). Right now it's only available for WIC moms, but
they are encouraged to come back each month if they want to, even if they
aren't scheduled to pick up their vouchers that day or month even. Our
breastfeeding coordinator facilitates the class, and is ready with
discussion topics if sharing and discussions stalls or is slow to start, but
generally she tries to focus on topics the moms want to bring up and share
that day. The class is new, and we've had more and more moms each month, but
it had a very slow start, and there usually aren't any more than 4 or 5 moms
in the group. Often times a mom will come for the appointment and she has
stopped breastfeeding and so does not want to participate in the class. I
think the class has potential, but it will take a while. We've thought about
advertising elsewhere (community clinics, hospitals in our county) and even
opening it up to those not on WIC, but haven't done that yet.

Hope this helps.
