In answer to a question on IQ, Morgan kindly directed us to this website:
http://www.glycoscience.com/glycoscience/start_frames.wm?FILENAME=C005

I was interested to see the conclusions drawn at the end of the page.
After a highly referenced article talking about the benefits of the
glycoconjugates present in human milk, it says:

>Many effects of breastfeeding (and glycoconjugates) persist for
several years. There are sound scientific studies, which show that
food and respiratory allergies, chronic infections (eg. otitis media),
autoimmune diseases, and inflammatory bowel diseases are less frequent
in individuals who nursed for several weeks after birth. Studies in
test animals and humans also strongly suggest that brain development
is enhanced in nursing neonates. Response to vaccines is also
increased in breast-fed children. Numerous studies have shown that the
normal biological activities of the glycoconjugates present in human
breast milk are consistent with these effects.37

With all of this available scientific evidence, the implications for
the value of supplemental glyconutrition for nursing mothers and
infants, especially when breastfeeding is not possible, is
overwhelming. In fact, the livestock industry has been using
glycoconjugate sugar (eg. sialic acid) supplementation in diets to
enhance growth and development in commercial breeding programs.37
Moreover, recent scientific studies of the bioavailability of
glycoconjugate sugars supplemented in the diet have shown that they
are well absorbed and preferentially utilized.133 This is particularly
important, since they are the necessary building blocks of
glycoproteins, glycolipids, and oligosaccharides.<

I found it very reassuring to learn that:
> In fact, the livestock industry has been using glycoconjugate sugar (eg. sialic acid) supplementation in diets to enhance growth and development in commercial breeding programs.<

Yup, you are right - it was an advertisement blinding us with science
and a message that more is better!

Oh, I particularly liked this statement:
>It seems there is little doubt that breastfeeding is beneficial, and,
in some instances, even life-sustaining. <
Talk about damning with faint praise.

norma, shaking her head
