This is anecdotal as it's my own experience!
My first pregnancy I gained between 45 and 50 pounds. I had PIH so I'd
retained a lot of fluid. I gave birth at 41 weeks by induction to a 9
lb 8 oz boy. When he was 18 months old and still nursing about 6 times
a day (this is a guess), I got pregnant with my daughter. Even though
my milk dried up at about 12 weeks, my son continued to nurse throughout
and now he will be 3 years old in November and still nurses 1-2 times
per day most days. I gained 35 pounds with that pregnancy and my
daughter weighed 8 lb 12 oz at birth. I did not have PIH with my
daughter. My milk had started to come in already on day 2.
A couple of factors: I followed the Bradley Method diet with my second
pregnancy as we were taking classes. I also cut back on the amount of
junk (still ate it but was more careful) because when you have a 2 year
old, they will want to eat what you're eating! I also wasn't ravenously
hungry and had retained about 15 pounds from my first pregnancy.
Even though I am making milk for two, my weight has pretty much
stabilized even though I'm significantly overweight. I have, however,
lost a few pounds recently without trying so it could be my daughter's
age, I don't feel like I am doing anything different. I did have mono
all summer unfortunately so my activity/energy is not where it normally
would be.
Anyhow I do not diet nor did I try to limit weight gain during either
pregnancy. My gain pattern was similar with both, with a huge gain
right in the middle.
