Just my personal experience here...
I gained about 60 pounds with my first pregnancy. I am 5'7" and have a small frame. No, I did not have a 40 pound baby!
Second prenancy, I gained about 30 pounds. I made no efforts to limit my weight gain. I was nursing a toddler at the time, and he nursed at least 15 times a day. He was 13 months old when I got pregnant, so the bulk of his calories came from breastfeeding. I'm sure the tandem nursing helped with limiting my weight gain. In addition to the calories expended making breastmilk, I was more conscious of my diet in general. Since I had a little one attached to my hip, I could not eat the mountains of junk I ate during my first pregnancy. I did not want him to think it was acceptable to have 2 to 4 junk food "treats" each day. I ate to hunger, and made sure I was consuming healthy foods throughout the day. If I ate plenty of fruits, veggies, lean protein, and drank my water and still wanted a treat, I had one.
