Dear all:

I haven't been on Lactnet so I have not followed the thread on the popular books for
soothing techniques. But I have to put in my two cents to join in with Pam's dissenting
voice. Just as with many of the other books that propose mechanisms for getting the
perfect compliant baby, soothing techniques applied over vigorously when a baby needs to
eat can cause failure to thrive. And I have heard reports that cases have occurred by too
vigorously applying the techniques in this latest of many popular books. We always have to
apply good common sense to make sure that the baby is fed first and we are not ignoring
important signals that the baby is giving us that may indicate hunger or some other
problem that should be addressed. Such techniques should always be used judiciously.

Best regards, Susan Burger
