While we try to straighten out the problem with Denise's subscription
I will forward the posts to the list for her. Since I am posting from
an online server I expect this to be royally garbled with =20 marks
everywhere and if it is too awful I will re-send it when I get home
from work. Will take this opportunity to add my 'amen' to this post,
I agree a hundred percent with Denise on hand expression the first
couple of days.

I'm pleased Phyllis cleared up the misunderstanding about pumping
within an hour of birth - ie it's just for babies heading off to NICU.
Normal, healthy babies I've been with after birth have sometimes taken
up to 2 hours in skin-to-skin to transition and finally begin
breastfeeding. I'd rather let them do it in their own time like this
then possibly run into the problems breastfeeding because of
separation and feeding them using other means.

There are also cultural differences too with the use of pumping so
early. As a midwife of 25+ years I haven't seen pumping begin until
lactogenesis II. Prior to that hand expressing is taught and found to
be very effective, particularly in collecting the 1ml, 2ml tiny
volumes. This is a pretty broad statement but I think Aussie women
would be very intimidated by the use of an electric breastpump on
their breasts so soon after birthing. I know I'd have been pretty
'freaked out' if someone had come to me with a pump before my
head had really got around the birth of my first baby and how I'm
going to feed.
