Dear Diane,
I found the key to that happening in our hosptial is to have the home get
started pumping early and present them with colostrum by the time daily
"rounds" are over and nurses begin to process the new orders, especially for
those who are too tiny to feed at the breast. Or even hand express if the
mother can have someone help her do this.
Our doctors really do prefer the babies to have colostrum first, but it is
up to the LC's and nurses to make that happen. A casual "we have colostrum
to use" I'm sure you'd prefer to use it, goes along way to making it
happen. Does your hosptial have LC's who can committ to keeping preemie
mom's being a priority to see? If not, don't be afraid to start by going to
collect the milk from the mother yourself, to make it very available for the
very first NG feeding.
As for the evidence, it abounds and should be easy to come by. Best wishes,
in creating some LC hours for yourself. NICU is a very unique place to work
.
