I have permission to post the following on behalf of a client I have been
doing lactation consults with. A 32 yr old primip who delivered 3 weeks
ago by primary C/S for failure to progress & fetal distress. Mom gained
greater than 45lbs and had mild symptoms of PIH.
She reported the following experience with letdown, "When the pins & needle
sensation occurs, I at the same time for a 1 to 2 min period, feel like I am
wearing a headband around my forehead and back of my head, which becomes
tighter with a feeling of pressure while my milk lets down" She denies
this to be painful or like a headache, but is an odd sensation of
significant pressure which resolves when the MER subsides. She reports
noting this pressure when her milk came in about day 4 to 5 and has
continued these past weeks. She did not mention this sensation until the
3rd visit we had together. She wondered if this was normal.
She denied any typical symptoms associated with post partum PIH. Her
diastolic pressures were up, but her physican was not concerned given she
had no other symptoms of PIH.
I did a quick search of the archives and found no reference matching her
description. Lawrence under, side effects and let-down, mentions
associated headache which occurs transiently at the initial MER or when
changing breasts.
I am interested if anyone has had this description; of a headband tightening
around the forehead causing a sensation of pressure during the MER with
women they have worked with? Or any other references they might share with
me.
