My daughter is almost 3 years. She nurses 5-8 times per day and goes 8-9
hour stretches when I work. I used the nuvaring (estrogen and progesterone
hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring) It did not lower my supply anymore than a
usual menstrual cycle unless, I used it continuously so as to not have a menses.
Yet, still it did not dry me up. I used the progesterone only pill and my su
pply increased. In the past I have used Regular combination birth control
pills and even with minimal nursing they also did not completely dry me up.
Whatever effects I have had they reversed once I discontinued the hormonal
contraception. I feel comfortable that for most menstruating lactating moms who have
started menses (and infant is over 6 months) that hormonal contraception
usually does not lower supply any more than normal mense cycling (which generally
causes a lowering of supply with ovulation and a rebound of supply with
menstruation).
