I've worked with babies who are blind from other causes
(microopthalmia). Most babies find the breast by feel, so they don't
need vision for breastfeeding. Making sure his chin is well planted on
the breast and the nipple is touching right above his upper lip will cue
him for the best latch.
As for the baby's pain with light, how about either getting him a tiny
pair of sunglasses, or a floppy hat (one with a brim that shields him
from overhead lights). Mom could perhaps put up thicker curtains so that
this little one is not so overwhelmed.
