I had a patient just last week with really inverted nipples that would
not become everted except with a pump. Patient stated first baby nursed
fine after pumping to evert nipples but that they inverted just as soon
as quit nursing first baby. Lois Mathews R.N. IBCLC

Subject: nipple changes after breastfeeding
I know a 32 yr old mother who pumped with her first child (never
latched) but
did nurse her 2nd child for 6 months. She stopped nursing that last
child 1 1/2
yrs ago. Since then, she has noticed one of her nipples has gradually
become
inverted. On her last gyn visit, her Dr did recommend that she get a
mammogram to rule out cancer (which she will have done very soon). In
the
meantime, she wanted me to find out if anyone had ever seen this
particular
phenomena....that was NOT related to carcinoma. She is highly anxious
about
this and even if her tests are negative, she would like some reassurance
that
this is not a total aberration.
She does report that BF was never very pleasant for her. She had
discomfort
in both nipples for the first 4 months and stopped BF at 6 months with
relief.
Could she have developed scar tissue in that nipple/areola complex that
caused this inversion?
Has anyone run into this particular situation before--again, not related
to
cancer??
