A close friend of mine was diagnosed today with carcinoma incitu after
repeated bad results of the routine PAP test. She is currently nursing her 3-
years old daughter and the gynaecologist was furious about that fact, stating
that because of the elevated hormonal levels breastfeeding could pose an
additional danger for her condition. The little girl is very close to weaning
naturally (she goes days and even weeks between nursings), so the mother
guesses her hormonal levels should be quite normal by now and is not very
comfortable with the recommended weaning on the spot. She wanted to know
wether it is really that dangerous to breastfeed under this circumstances (a
conical biopsy is scheduled in 2 weeks, so she will be uncertain about how far
this condition had progressed) and should she really wean. Her priorities were
quite firm - she stated that having to choose between weaning and her
uterus, she will choose the possibility of having another child. But she wants
to know if there is really a connection between breastfeeding and how this
condition progresses - a question I cannot answer, so we both will be very
grateful for any suggestions from the wise ones on the list.
