Winnie,
I know there are those who think that WIC shouldn't be providing formula at
all and even though I am outside the US and obviously not within the
environment that prevails I think that this is unlikely to happen any time
soon...however, I wonder if the place to start would be to delay providing
any formula until the baby is 6-8 weeks....I wonder if that would mean that
many mums would want to wait until they were getting some formula for free
to use it...I wonder if by the time their baby was 6 weeks if they might
have the hang of it an decide to keep going? I wonder if by 6-8 weeks if the
amount that WIC provides would not be enough at that stage (no idea really!)
and I wonder if once a delay was instituted whether it might be possible to
keep extending the delay and gradually remove the US govt as the larest
purchaser of infant formula in the world??

Subject: WIC (not just in relation to teens)
> Rachel mentions that teens are shocked at learning the cost of formula,
especially when they will be on WIC (for those out of the US, it is a
government program to provide suplemental food for Women Infants and
Children). I can't count the number of moms I dealt with who really
believed that WIC would provide all the formula they would need! It is a
SUPPLEMENTAL program, not a full food program. People seem to understand
this when it comes to food for the mothers and children, but not when it
applies to infants. Unfortunately, the amount of formula it will provide IS
adequate for the baby's needs in the early days, but before too long, (and
usually past the time when it would be easy to start breastfeeding-by
design?) they need to also buy some formula. Why isn't this information
more fully explained when moms are making their feeding decisions in the
first place? Or if it is fully explained, why aren't they hearing it? I
ask myself this every time I see pleas from foo
