Jamie,
The reason extra time cannot be given for people to pump is that there
is a lot of work done by the proctors during the lunch break, and it
can't get done if there are still candidates in the room. Also, the poor
proctors need a few minutes to eat some lunch too. This work includes
security procedures, exam counts, and photocopying every single answer
sheet to make sure that if the originals are lost in the mail, you would
not need to wait a whole year and take the exam again. (The chief
proctor is notified once all the exams are processed, and the copies are
shredded.)
Also, exam sites are not affiliated with IBLCE, and chief proctors work
hard to beg free space from hospitals, etc, in an attempt to keep exam
costs down (imagine how high they would be if we had to pay $500-1000
rent for an exam room for each site). So a separate room for pumping
would be another favor to ask, and may or may not be possible.
As we all work to build the credibility of our profession by being the
most competent and empathetic IBCLCs we can, it should get easier to get
better accommodations in the health care system.
Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC NYC
