While the likelihood of ovulation prior to first menses does increase the
further past 6 months one goes, this does not necessarily translate into the
inability to use LAM as a form of birth control/ child spacing.

Women who are familiar with their body's cycle patterns are able to identify
many "almost fertile" signals in their mucous, cervix, or whatever they find
most telling for themselves.  This can be frustrating as the signals can
last for months (or years) for some women - but it does allow for abstinence
or alternate birth control on a less frequent basis than assuming all
protection is gone.
