Nina, I'm glad you are asking these questions. We DO need to question
our assumptions and make sure we are not just parroting misinformation.

There are several different kinds of studies comparing bottle feeding to
breastfeeding. Misuno Katsumi of Japan has done a lot of work comparing
flow and swallowing characteristics. Ardran and Smith studied breast vs
bottle with cineradiography, but their latches were atrocious, and their
frame rate was low to reduce radiation exposure. Other groups have
looked at electromyography (muscle activation) between feeding methods,
and found significant differences.

We have been looking at all methods of feeding in our ultrasound study,
but we don't have sufficient numbers of any one brand of bottle to make
judgments yet. It can be hard to make comparisons, because we are
imaging whatever methods of feeding the parents are using -
breastfeeding, bottles and fingerfeeding so far. Also, our babies are
tongue-tied, at least for the first ultrasound, so they are NOT sucking
normally.

It would be an interesting study to gather a bunch of bf babies with no
feeding issues, whose moms are working and bottle feeding ebm during the
work day, and image them all on several different bottles.
