The New York Times published an article in September 2006 on the "two-class
system" for breastfeeding mothers...highlighting the issue with the example
of how differently Starbuck's front line and back office employees are
accommodated (http://tinyurl.com/3xlgdr).
Here in Oregon, I and other breastfeeding advocates are pressing for passage
of an amended workplace accommodation bill (currently we have legislation
that says that employers "may" provide accommodations for breastfeeding
mothers...we're trying to get the law to say "shall"). Even though, as
someone mentioned previously in this thread, our state's health department
has a "breastfeeding mother friendly employer" designation, few
employers...even those that provide accommodations...seek the designation.
You can learn more about current and propose legislation at the LLL web site
(http://lalecheleague.org/Law/LawUS.html?m=0,1,0).

This is in sharp contrast to women working on assembly lines, who in some
factories have to fight for the right to urinate let alone breastfeed. It
seems to me that the only answer to this, is legislation that mandates a
right to breastfeed (and urinate!) and/or pump in the workplace. I would be
very interested to hear on or offlist about efforts beyond C. Mahoney's that
address this issue in the US.
