I think that beliefs surrounding the motivation for breastfeeding
continuance is the most serious problem that we face in seeking to reduce
the frequency of premature weaning (the belief that a child is "too old"
starts so very young, 4-6 months). I think that this is something that it
very hard to change.
I do have research that addresses just who drives breastfeeding continuance
(paper just sent to a journal) and I really hope that this helps...if
nothing else I hope it gives mothers ammunition when dealing with people who
are pressuring women to wean.

"What I find is that even my most liberal, open-minded friends, those who
were cool with toddler nursing, are disturbed by breastfeeding into early
childhood. All
that cultural conditioning that says, "Breastfeeding beyond a certain age is
more for the
mother than for the child" kicks in, even in the minds of the most sensible
people. "
