My first thought was that this study might well point to one bit that
may be accurate. Think of all the moms whose babies are doing poorly
with feedings but are "on the breast all the time". These moms are
indeed more likely to wean if things don't get sorted out than moms
whose babies feed in ten minutes, are done, and feed again in a couple
of hours. Also, one would then see more weight gain in those babies b/c
they are actually feeding, and if so would empty the breast and signal
milk production. Also, as Cathy Genna pointed out, one cannot follow
the baby who is not competent to lead. There is also the issue of using
weight gains as a measure of success--I only trust weight as a guide
when the reference is derived form normally-birthed, exclusively
breastfed infants. Any other baby cannot be an accurate reference for
normal infant behavior.
