News Update from Dimensions of Dental Hygiene Journal:
Research Update
Nursing Moms Need Calcium
New research published in the January 2007 issue of Journal of Periodontology found that breast feeding mothers need to consume sufficient amounts of calcium or they may risk bone loss around their teeth and gums. Japanese researchers looked at the effect of lactation on alveolar bone loss and found that the bone structures around the teeth were at risk, particularly if not enough calcium is included in the mothers’ diets. An abstract of the article is available online at: www.joponline.org.
