1) She has heard of meds that dissolve gall stones. Is that true? If
so, what are pregnancy and lactation risks? Are meds compatible with both?

2) Mom is nervous about the restricted diet and her previous history.
When she didn't eat she had a noticeable drop in her milk supply.

3) Mom also worried about a no fat diet and the content/quality of her
milk supply.

Jaye, the meds to dissolve gall stones have not been proven to work besides
the fact of taking them and issues of breastfeeding.
The "no fat" diet is also not proven to prevent further gall stone attacks.
In reality we all develop gall stones. Some of us live with them in
harmony, some of us have mild attacks, and then there are others who have very
serious attacks. A "low fat" diet is always a good thing but she should consume
good fats Vs the bad ones.
What you did not bring up was the pain meds usually prescribed to people
with gall bladder attacks, which is Demerol (Meperidine). I feel for the short
duration that a mom may be on these meds is worth just watching the baby than
not breastfeed.
Good luck to this mom.
