Ann: This situation probably falls under cultural practices, in which I would
most likely leave it alone. We occasionally see lesbian couples. One partner
asked not only if it was OK for her to do skin-to-skin, but was it also OK for
her to put the baby to her breast. Sure! We did discuss making sure the
mother was feeding the baby enough times per day to ensure good weight
gain. I know she nursed the baby some in the hospital and for a little bit once
home. The mom nursed for a year and it was a bit of a struggle for her
because she almost continously had very sensitive sore nipples, the cause of
which we were never able to figure out! Mom concluded she must have super
sensitive skin. This couple is very open about their relationship and have
consequently taught me much on how to sensitively support and care for the
same-sex family unit. In fact, I just this morning received a beautiful family
photo (mom's sister is a professional photographer) in a Christmas card from
them.
