Breastfeeding after Breast cancer
My name is Shayla and I am a nursing student at the University of
North Dakota. I was searching thru the archives for information on
breastfeeding after having breast cancer. There were a few entries back in
1997 and 1999 in which they stated a concern that breastfeeding post
treatment would promote breast cancer.
There are several articles that say breastfeeding reduces the risk of
getting breast cancer. Rea (2004) said that a woman’s risk of getting breast
cancer was reduced by 4.3% for every 12 months in which she breastfed her
children.
In doing some extended research, I found that there are not many
journal articles pertaining to the topic of breastfeeding children after having
breast cancer and the treatment (with no mastectomy). One article by Hindle
and Gonzalez (2002) found that radiation treatments decreased the amount of
breast milk in the affected breast and had no affect on the opposite side.
But, Michels, et al. (1996) found that carcinogens were cleared from the
breast during lactation. If this is so, what are the affects on the infant that
is breastfed after the mother has had breast cancer? Is the baby at risk for
getting cancer?
