We also run a breastfeeding support group at my hospital. We have done this
for about 10 years. I do not call it specifically a breastfeeding support group,
rather a baby and mom support group. We have anywehre from 5-15 mom and
baby pairs per week.

It is run very similar to Andreas and we advertise in the same way (flyer in
mothers information and also at consults). We have a scale to weigh babies,
if mom desires. An IBCLC moderates the group. The format is very informal.

About 20% of those who attend are formula feeding. We had made a decision,
from the beginning, to allow formula feeding moms to attend. Something
interesting has happened to those moms. They almost always express regret
over not having breastfed once they attend a few meetings and see the moms
nursing their babies. Also, when they have their next baby, they often chose
to breastfeed.

The mix works well and the breastfeeding moms are very sensitive to the fact
that there are some very personal reasons why some moms chose to formula
feed. Only once in the 10 years did I have to privately remind a
breastfeeding mom that it was her job, in this setting, to quietly promote
breastfeeding. This is done by showing what how wonderfullly beautiful and
easy it is to mother at the breast. Also, the health of the breastfeeding
babies is advertisement all by itself!
