When not being a parenting hormone or night-releasing reproductive
organ maintaining hormone, prolactin is a stress hormone. The link to
cancer from chronic (non-bf) elevations makes sense.
Non-responsive parenting (more-often but not necessarily associated
with formula feeding than bf) leads to infant stress and causes
permanent organization of neurons and hormone receptors toward
increased stress hormone responses throughout life. The studies are
performed mostly with cortisol but prolactin and other stress hormone
releases are certainly part of the scenario. Chronic stress hormone
elevations are linked to heart disease as well as cancer and other
illnesses.
