Firstly, welcome to Lactnet Carly - I hope you get as much information and
support out of it as I do!
The issue of frozen milk comes up quite often and it is difficult to give
clear guidelines because so much depends on the climate and the room
temperature. Usually we recommend transferring the frozen milk to the
fridge for two or three hours and then just warming it by putting the bottle
in a pan of hot water until it loses the chill.
However my reason for posting this is because there are studies now that
show that freezing or prolonged refrigeration of breast milk reduces the
antioxidents content - this is one of the valuable properties that
strengthens the immune system.
Keeping the odd bag in the freezer for emergencies is still preferable to
giving formula but as a routine, I now advise mums to pump milk not more
than two days ahead of their needs and keep it in the fridge for no more
than those two days.
The study I quoted in a previous posting should be in the archives, but if
anyone wants it, I can find it and send it.
