Many of us on Lactnet have traveled and/or lived in enough different places
that we know NATURAL is not always the least dangerous thing to do!
I believe that the myth of the "happy native" has caused many to condemn ALL
interventions. In most of our countries we would never accept the maternal
death rate that would occur if we allowed "nature to take its course" We do
NOT accept the infant death rate that DOES occur when there are no
interventions available.
As there are many GOOD things about our current ability to protect and save
lives, we need to work with nature - while at the same time working with
those who do APPROPRIATE interventions. Making them the enemy or condemning
them is not going to work!
It reminds me of when I was first a mom - I kept saying "don't ..." And what
happened? My kid (especially #2) went ahead and did JUST THAT!
Finally I heard someone say - instead of telling kids what NOT to do - SHOW
them WHAT TO DO! It made all the difference: "Let's play with your legos",
worked much better than "don't eat the violets"
So we need to encourage what TO DO - rather than saying "you're doing it all
wrong"...
