Hi,
We have a committee meeting with our hospital's pediatricians,
neonatologists, social workers and lactation this Friday to discuss what
approach to take regarding breastfeeding when mothers test positive for
marijuana use when pregnant. As you can imagine, there are strong feelings
on many sides of the picture!
The issue is not if THC-positive mothers will keep the babies or if they are
competent to care for their babies; the issue is whether or not they should
be instructed to not breastfeed. I find a lot of information lumps
all substance-use (alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, etc) into one.
So, I'm hoping for references regarding breastfeeding and maternal marijuana
use or any information you think might be useful in this discussion... If
your institution has a policy, what is it based on?
Thanks for the collective wisdom-
Susan Lawrence, RN, IBCLC, LLLL
