Hello all,
I have learnt that one retains 5% of the material at a conference, 10% from
a lecture, 20% if there is audiovisual, 30% with demonstration, 50% if there
is group discussion, 75% is practice is included, and 90% if the
participants use the info immediately or teach somebody else.
So in my breastfeeding class I try and include all that.
I start off by asking the participants to give me one question or concern
they may have, which is on the top of their list ( Linda Smith's idea) I
write that down on a flip chart so that at the end of the class all their
concerns are addressed.
I then ask them why should they breastfeed? And they talk about all the
"advantages" of....
I then tell them that actually there are no advantages to it. It is a
natural normal process etc but what there is is risk to NOT breastfeeding.
And we discuss about the consequences of not breastfeeding.
Then we talk about "How To". I demonstrate proper positioning, proper latch
and how to identify milk transfer.
We then watch a video and I have several. My favorite one is "Baby's
Chioce". But I also sometimes show, "Infant cues" or "Self attachement".
After the break I divide the group in smaller groups and I give them a doll
and a breast to each group and we practice proper positioning and manual
expression of breastmilk.
Finally, I give them their resources, LLL meetings, Breastfeeding clinics in
their area and link them up with a support mom ( peer support) . They also
get an appointment to visit the breastfeeding clinic prenatally, about 2
weeks before their due date, where they see lots of postpartum moms with
babies and now they actually see a real baby at the breast and are able to
ask lots of questions to the moms and also see services offered if they
encounter any problems.
At the end I make sure that all the concerns on the flip chart have been
addressed. There are often several myths.
The classes last 2 hrs. with a 10 minute break. It is interactive and a lot
of fun.
