Ros,
I was just agreeing with what Winnie had posted:
“I have held back in saying this, and I am sure I will be flamed for
voicing it now, but I doubt that this would have happened while Joanne was
at the helm. She must be rolling over in her grave at this turn of
events!”
I was under the impression that Joanne was adamant about there always be a
pathway that would allow non-medical people to qualify to sit for the
exam. I do believe that pathway is under attack and this new SOP is step
one towards the exclusion of all of us who came from other areas of
expertise. And I think that Joanne would be upset by this wish not being
respected.
It has been a hastily written SOP to diminish the non-medical LC from
recerting and practicing in our field. We bring many different strengths
to this field because we come from such diversified backgrounds. I
consider myself a very competent LC and have made it a practice to stay on
top of all the studies, as is evident in my many posts to LactNet.
There are many different structures of LC practice, which the SOP did not
address. I work on a corporate level, offering educational materials and
24/7 breastfeeding information and support. I do not send out reports to
MDs but do send information to the moms to share with their physicians. I
will NOT change the way I practice. I will NOT sit here and allow
stupidity to sacrifice breastfeeding. Can’t nurse while on Tylenol?
Amoxicillian? Only treat baby for thrush? Pump and dump for x-rays?? Wean
for surgery? I could go on and on, but most of us have heard it already. I
will continue to offer correct, evidenced based information to my clients.
Guess I will just have to take a wait and see attitude and hope that my
exam in 1985 was not taken in vain.
Respectfully,
Ellen Penchuk, IBCLC, RLC
