I got a call from a mother I saw in September. This is her second baby;
the first one is 19 years old. She had a ton of milk when I saw her and
the baby transferred 2.1 oz. in less than 10 minutes. Her breasts were
perfect for breastfeeding and the baby was a champion sucker. She was
worried he wouldn't get enough milk because he was jaundiced, but it was
almost resolved by the time I saw her. Looking at my notes to the HCP, I
said that breastfeeding was going wonderfully and the mom was instructed
to feed 10-12 times a day, use compressions to stimulate swallowing,
monitor diapers for a few more days, etc. Today, she calls to tell me that
she followed absolutely none of my advice. She kept offering the baby
bottles of pumped milk because she wasn't sure if he was getting enough.
She fell behind in pumping and had to supplement with formula. The baby
lost his skill at breastfeeding and now only goes there for comfort,
suckles a little, and then yells his head off for a bottle. The mom said
now she can get only 10cc from both breasts with a Pump In Style (new). I
am confounded that this woman would take a perfectly good breastfeeding
relationship and totally destroy it with bottles! She's a stay at home mom
and wants to keep giving him breastmilk, but it's been nearly two months
since I saw her and her milk is so low. She's been on Fenugreek and More
Milk tincture for over a week. I suggested adding Blessed Thistle and gave
her a couple of websites to look at in addition to strongly urging her to
rent a Symphony from me. Any other ideas?
