I have a young mother, with an initially non-latching, passive baby, who
now has wrecked nipples and practically no milk during pumping.
I have no birth details other than that baby was born on Saturday 30th.
just under 6lbs, and unresponsive to breast and feeding. No lactation
support given for first 10 hours. Baby finger fed colostrum. On Day 2,
latching occurred after extreme support, including nipple shields, and
mother's nipple turned to hamburger by Day 4. All concerned have stated
there is a suspected tongue tie. Mother appears unresponsive to pumps,
and what milk she has been getting is reducing, with several pumping
sessions being completely dry. 'Supportive' midwives and peds are
advising formula top ups 'til the situation sorts itself out. No plans
have been made to assess and/or treat suspected tongue tie. She has
spent time with an LC, and still no plans are in place to be pro-active
on the problems other than to heal the nipples. She's been told to give
top up with 40mls of formula every 6 hours, take Domperidone and keep
pumping, and they will check on her on Friday, by which time baby will
be 7 days old.
I've asked her to try hand expression to see if her milk can get out
that way, and suggested she try Cranial-Sacral Therapy in the immediate
term to help with baby. I've also asked for permission to post here:
So who can I send her to for immediate tongue tie help, and does anyone
have any CST contacts in this area?
She is in Bullsbrook, between Joondulup and Midland, but will travel
"anywhere". Mother violently opposed to formula, and feels like a
compete failure. She feels everyone has been helpful and supportive,
but that nothing is actually being achieved.
If you are the person who can help her, or knows where she can go, email
me and I will pass on contact details.
Anyone else really worried by a system that prescribes Domperidone on
day 4 to a mother with bleeding and mashed nipples and a suspected
tongue tie baby? Or am I missing something...?
