Many of my clients have children that do not show an interest in foods until
sometimes 9 months, as was my own son. When the "pincher" grasp becomes
under control then they can grab other types of foods and experiment
themselves and want the food on their own. I encourage clients to put foods
like cereals, etc that can be smooshed by the baby easily but grabbed and
they will begin to take them on their own in most instances. Recent studies
have shown that iron in the term baby is typically stable until 8-9 months, so
at that point you would want a separate source introduced.

Yet I have had one client who due to severe allergies in the family and
sensitivities were seen in the child at a young age of a couple weeks, the
pediatrician and allergist agreed that baby should not have solids until closer
to one. He was breastfed the whole time and began some foods at 10 months
but minimal amounts of only certain types and he was fine. Hope that helps.
