I suggest you plug iron and constipation into google scholar and see what
pops up. Iron fortified infant formulas are known to cause constipation.
Others have noted that there are various form of iron supplement. Amino
acid chelates appear to be the most bioavailable of the non-haem sources.
Premmies do need iron supps (they miss out on the period of gestation in
which they can lay down iron stores). I have never seen any evidence that
supplementing mothers will increase iron content of her milk. My
understanding is that milk composition is remarkably unaffected by maternal
diet.
