We don't keep really sick babies here, but I have the moms use the nicu
storage guidelines while their babies are in nicu, but once discharged I
tell them they can change to the "regular" storage guidelines.
I give moms a handout on bf a premie and it gives the 48 hr guideline. I
also give mom a regular bf packet which has general milk storage for well
babies.
If a baby had been very sick and was still not really well at discharge,
perhaps the more conservative guidelines could be used - but for what length
of time? In general, once a baby goes home, they are "well babies."
