According to the news 4700 travelers were spending the night at the Denver
Airport, which closed due to snow and winds. Food and water were in good
supply, but it was announced that infant formula was in short supply at the
airport. Western Washington just had a large storm with coastal winds up to
100 mph. Over one million households lost their power last Friday in the
early a.m. with nighttime temperatures in the mid 20 degrees F. We
fortunately have generators at our house and my daughters thanks to my
electrical engineer husband planning ahead and wiring our houses with a main
panel with a cut off switch. We got power back in 3 days, but many more
will have to wait until next Tues/Wed to be restored as damage was so
extensive. Our 2-1/2 year old granddaughter really liked wearing two pair
of pants because grandma was wearing two also. Mothers really have to think
ahead about how they will be feeding in such emergency circumstances. Even
if everyone is prepared for the recommended 3 days, they may not be able to
get gas for their cars to get to a store. The stations I normally use off
the freeway did not have power for their fuel pumps and were still closed
until late yesterday night-I had to backtrack to find a station.

The tragedy here has been immigrant households using their generator indoors
or in their garage. One family pulled it into the garage in order to spare
neighbors from the constant noise. The son found his whole family of 4 dead
from carbon monoxide poisoning. Now there are green notices being posted in
many languages about the dangers of this odorless, tasteless, invisible
poisonous gas. The Attention Danger ! labels on the generators, barbeque
grilling units are all in English. In many parts of the world grilling is
done under cover, but their homes are not sealed off from the weather as
ours are. I guess the toll is becoming the worst this area has ever seen.
People are in groups are being treated at the hyperbaric O2 chamber that is
as large in size as a Boeing airplane cabin at one Seattle hospital.
