This paragraph appeared in a post from you, Betsy, and it set off the thread
because believe it or not, it is an extremely inflammatory statement to
anyone who has read the UN charter on human rights or who believes the tenet
that 'all people are created equal, and are endowed by their creator with
certain inalienable rights, etc'. The listmothers have seldom had the
amount of private negative reactions off the list that we had to this part
of this post, and we felt it needed to be explored. What *did* you mean, if
you meant something other than what you wrote? The post is in the archives,
dated Monday 12 February, with the subject 'baby's rights vs. Mom's'

You yourself wrote in that post:
"If some of you who do not work with large groups of the general public
could
see the calibre (or lack thereof) of some of our parents of this generation
coming up, you'd realize that it is probably good that there is an
alternative to
breastfeeding. That is not to say that there aren't individuals from all
walks of
life who wish to breastfeed and are successful, but there are those for whom

this would not (and should not) ever be the choice."

Tangents arise when people respond to posts or parts of them that raise
other issues than were perhaps the main focus of the original thread. I am
still waiting to hear why you wrote this, if you meant something else. When
I read it, I see that it says 'there are those for whom [breastfeeding] ...
should not ever be the choice,' and it would appear that your reason for
stating this has to do with what you see as a problem with the 'calibre' of
some of the parents in 'large groups of the general public'.

I did try to write to you privately, but my e-mail to you was returned,
blocked as spam, so I was forced to resort to responding on the list.
