Mirine,
There were media reports of babies dying after Hurricane Katrina (as well as
reports of parents not having sufficient food and babies
"fitting"...hyponatraemia?) and a paediatrician published his experiences of
being in New Orleans and having the urgent job of delivering infant formula
to stranded families (he found babies being given just water but did not
report an illness in the babies).
There will shortly be a resource on the net for "members of the public" to
use in advocating with aid agencies and governments to ensure appropriate
provision of aid and emergency preparedness in relation to infant feeding in
emergencies. It contains argument as to why this is not just a developing
world issue and resources (letter templates) etc for people to use in acting
on this. I will keep you posted!

Karleen, thank you for the article. I have promoting infant feeding as a
priority in hurricane planning for a few years now in my area of the
hurricane belt.
Sadly, until there is widespread coverage of a similar incident in "our
backyard", people will continue to see that as a "third world problem."
Does anyone know if there have been any documented cases following crises in
the US such as Katrina aftermath ( which would have been such a likely
candidate) ?
