ILCA is an international organization, which *anyone* may join as an
individual. As the website (www.ilca.org) states: The International
Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) is the professional association for
International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and other
health care professionals who care for breastfeeding families. Our vision
is a worldwide network of lactation professionals. Our mission is to advance
the profession of lactation consulting worldwide through leadership,
advocacy, professional development, and research."
There are also many ILCA affiliates, which are "subgroups" of ILCA often
organized along geographic lines. Each operates under its own set of
organizational guidelines, but always in accordance with the overall ILCA
mission stated above. Thus, one affiliate might be quite small, perhaps two
dozen IBCLCs who live in one city and who gather periodically to "break
professional bread." Another affiliate may be quite large, representing a
state or country, a running a conference each year.
