When I joined this list, I joined mainly to read and did not think I
would have much to contribute. I've been an RN for 14 years, and have
breastfed my own child for almost 2. I am expecting our second child in
February and will in all likelihood be tandem nursing. I am a stay at
home mom now, currently out of the field of nursing, but I am also
working on being able to help other moms breastfeed in my area. I had
considered IBCLC in the very long term as a possible future goal, but
after reading (and agreeing!!) about what the SoP changes will mean, I
am not sure I even want to consider it!
As a fellow RN, I agree 100% with all the other RN's here - that a huge
part of our job is to question and check everything. It is such a big
part of what we do that we don't even think about it, it's automatic.
And like a couple of the MD's here have said, they WANT to be corrected
if they give out the wrong information or make a mistake! (I want that
too, by the way!) I just cannot picture keeping my mouth closed when I
know that someone's ped or someone else has given them totally incorrect
information/suggestions that could harm their breastfeeding
relationship. With the "peer counselling" so to speak, that I plan to
be doing in the near future, at least I know I am allowed to give the
right info and leave it up to the mother, instead of sitting back quietly.
Does the IBCLE realize that this is turning people off? Do they realize
that they are losing the potential for wonderfully knowledgeable IBCLC's
before they even get started? Most likely it will be many years before
I would even be attempting to get ready to do this, so perhaps they will
straighten this mess out by that time! I will be watching it though!
