The US Food and Drug Administration just hit Nestle with a warning letter
regarding nutrient deficiencies in its Good Start infant formula with iron. The
FDA tested the US formula in May 2006 and just issued the letter on November
27. It was just posted on the FDA website. The deficiencies were lower
calcium and phosphorus than called for in the infant formula act as well as lower
amounts of these nutrients than what was claimed on the label. One has to
wonder why it took so long for the warning letter to go out. How many babies
were fed this deficient formula? Is any agency going to track what happened to
the babies who consumed this deficient and misbranded formula? Of course not.
Once more little babies pay the price of slack oversight. It would be
interesting to test all of the babies who received formula from the deficient batch
to see what health outcomes they will suffer.
