Yes, Gonneke, in La Leche League communication workshops, Leaders report 
very eloquent and sophisticated understanding of their non-verbal 
babies' communication. I remember when a speech pathologist visited a 
Twins' Club meeting I was at, I was thrilled to hear her talk about 
"early communication." Winnicott's work on eye contact and mirroring are 
very important in this regard, too.

When we suggest that mothers open wide and stick out their tongue, so 
that babies will imitate them and latch on better, one of the most 
important outcomes is having mothers and babies engage in a kind of 
conversation. Breastfeeding is a dialogue as well as a dance!

Each baby speaks a different language. Having twins twice made me 
especially conscious of this multilingualism!
