Dear Lactnetters, Ever since someone mentioned spinning babies I knew that I had read something about that, somewhere. An early morning eureka sent me to What’s Going on in There? How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life by Lise Eliot, Ph.D.  and on page 154 I found what was stuck in my brain. The section is on Vestibular Stimulation and apparently there was research done on "spinning children". Children from 3 to 13 months where exposed to 16 sessions of chairs spinning (spun around in a swivel chair on the researcher's lap). Each spin was concluded with an abrupt stop. The babies loved it and when compared with the control groups the spun babies showed more advanced development of both their reflexes and their motor skills.
Maybe there are some babies who need the extra "push" to help them organize themselves to breastfeed.
