Well I think you posted that the latch was mostly fixed. Maybe it is not completely fixed yet, and still some trauma or leftover damage or nerve memory. If the meds yield unpleasant side effects for this mom, then she can try having the warmth ready. Maybe a heating pad set on low and at the ready.
