Hi Rachel, It sounds like over abundant milk supply BUT BUT BUT I would
want to do test weights and see how much baby is removing at the times
he pulls off. I would also want to make sure baby is growing 6-8 ounces
per week, and I am sorry I don't have that metric measurements handy.
Why I suspect over abundant milk supply is how he sucks then pulls off
crying, mom's milk sprays, he cries upon the MER, and he has slimy
stools. Mucously looking stools are a sign of OAMS. Other signs are lots
and lots of runny bowel movements, like every feeding. I have seen
babies remove 3 ounces in five minutes or less at the breast and come
off crying. One baby removed 5 ounces in about 5 minutes and was very
very unhappy. Slowing her flow and going to one side every 2 feedings
helped a lot, and she pumped some off with a manual pump for a few days
before every nursing. Some kids like that flow, and some just can't
swallow with it.
