Hello All,

I had the honor of being a speaker for a local moms group today. All about
breastfeeding of course. When I was done answering their questions, I told
them I had one to ask them.

I presented a case of mom has thrush but Dr tells her there is no such thing
as thrush on nipples and refuses to treat her or baby. Mom calls and IBCLC
who asks if she has seen her Dr. Mom says yes and repeats what Dr has told
her. The IBCLC then says "Well, your Dr is correct."

The moms comments to "How would you feel at this point?" Defeated, angry,
frustrated. "What would you do next?" one mom said, "suffer?", others said
call LLL or another LC, and get online for info.

"So the LLLL tells you yes thrush exists and some moms have found 'X'
treatment to be very helpful. What would you think about the IBCLC?" Moms'
response: like the IBCLC didn't know what she was talking about.

"OK, you can't get a hold of a LLLL - you call another LC - she agrees with
the Dr. How do you feel?" One mom said "Well, a Dr and 2 IBCLC's have just
told me that it doesn't exist on the nipples so they must be right." A 17
yr old mom said,'If I have thrush (which I have) and I know I am in pain and
all 3 tell me it doesn't exist I'll call another LC."

"Great! You call 15 IBCLC's and they all tell you the same thing - the Dr
is right. You finally get a hold of a LLLL and she tells you the previous
comment, and you have relief from the thrush. What do you think now?"

All the moms agreed that the IBCLC's obviously did not know what they were
talking about and all agreed that if this were the case, what was the point
of seeing or even calling one? They wondered why the IBCLC was agreeing
with the Dr when even they knew that something was wrong - what happened to
helping the mothers and babies?

I told them my dilemma - how I was practicing outside my new SoP, gave them
the basics of the Catch 22 we are in. They were furious! They wanted to
know if they could write IBLCE. I gave them the website. These moms knew
that if we cannot contradict the Dr or give appropriate education to them
then they will not get the care they have come to rely on.

No real point here other than to show the world that the mothers rely on us
- they told me to my face today - they will be harmed if we are not allowed
to practice due to this new SoP.

Just thought you might like to know.

Warmly,

Jaye
