Kellie - I think LCs in peds and dr offices would help out tremendously on
increasing the percentages of babies that are breastfed (Healthy People 2010
goals). I realize the talk on "An LC for Every Mum" is more about support for
the mom that has initiated bf but what about those mom-to-be's that don't
initiate this only because of lack of education and support.
Isn't part of an LC job not only to support bf but to also promote bf....studies
have found that 1/3 to 1/2 women decide the method of infant feeding prior
to becoming pregnant, leaving 1/2 to 2/3 making their decision during
pregnancy. I know in my metropolitan area, it is not the norm to have LCs in
doctors offices (and time discussing feeding methods during prenatal visits are
limited).
I think you hit the nail on the head!! : )
