Hello Karyn Grace,
How exciting to be part of the provincial discussion on health care! We are
blessed to have you representing the needs of mothers and babies in our
province.
The info. that I have on breastfeeding initiation and duration rates is
taken from a 2005 joint position paper from Newfoundland and Labrador. It
is well referenced, authored by respected organizations and may provide some
other noteworthy stats for your presentation. I've included both the
statistic you were looking for (BC seems to be a benchmark in Canada in
terms of breastfeeding initiation and duration) and the link to the full
article.
"British Columbia has the highest provincial initiation rate at 93.3%
(Statistics Canada, 2003). Similarly, Newfoundland and Labrador’s six month
breastfeeding duration rate is low at 11.1% compared to the national rate of
18.7% and the highest provincial rate of 28.8% in British Columbia."
